The inside story
Ostrów Tumski is the oldest part of the city of Wrocław and sits between the branches of the Oder River. Here, after over one thousands years from its initial construction, the Cathedral Island still hosts incredible monuments such as the St Martin's Cathedral and the Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross and St. Bartholomew.
Not long after the first cathedral was raised, several religious buildings appeared in the area because during the Congress of Gniezno in AD 1000, it was decided that Ostrów Tumski would have become the bishopric of Wrocław. The Island was consequentially sold to the church and started to benefit of a stuatus of separated jurisdiction offering protection to those who were fleeing from the law in Wrocław.
The majority of Ostrów Tumski was destroyed during the Second World War and finally rebuilt by the end of the 20th century.
