High up in the hills north of Skiathos town, you'll find two of the island's holiest sites. The Church of the Archangels and the Evagelistria Monastery have been attracting the faithful for centuries – and it's easy to see why.
Your afternoon starts with a guided tour of the Church of the Archangels – which is famed for its healing spring waters – and then hike over to the Evangelistria Monastery. It is a haven of cultural and historical artefacts, and was a key location in Greece's struggle for independence– it was here that Greece's flag was raised for the first time.
This 18th-century monastery is perched on the mountainside and surrounded by a lush pine forest. The views from here are spectacular. The chapel is decorated with colourful icons and there's also a museum displaying rare books and manuscripts. After a guided tour, you'll enjoy a tasting of some local wines. And you'll also have free time to wander around the monastery's grounds before heading back to your hotel.
