Rotterdam's modern skyline and riverside setting have earned it the nickname ‘Manhattan on the Maas', and you'll flit between its big ticket sights on this trip. Venture inside the futuristic Markthal, where huge frescoes of traditional market produce decorate the panelled interior. You'll also see the sleek Erasmus Bridge, which connects the two halves of the city. Modern architecture's also served up in the form of the quirky Pencil House and the Cube Houses, which are like optical illusions. Traditionalists are catered for, too, thanks to one of Europe's first high-rise buildings – the century-old Witte Huis. Then there's the Sint-Laurenskerk Church – one of the only Medieval buildings still standing – and the oldest statue in the Netherlands.
