Introducing Pallas

Tucked away inside Finland’s third-biggest national park, a trip to Palla is like stepping into the magical world of Narnia. Snow-covered landscapes and frostbitten scenery of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park will seduce you. With seven fells – locally known as the Seven Sisters – and around 500 kilometres of forest trails and pistes, it’s a one-of-a-kind destination for hiking and skiing. Breathe in the world’s purest air as you discover the area, or climb Taivaskero, the highest fell for breathtaking vistas. It was here that the 1952 Olympic torch was lit by rays of the Midnight Sun. Its untouched and isolated location also puts Palla in the spotlight for catching sight of the Northern Lights.

1. Get your boots on and explore Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park

Whether it's walking through the snow or whizzing down the slopes, the park is a paradise of trails to explore. In summer, you’ll be mesmerised by the green pines, blue skies and crystal-clear rivers. There’s also plenty of wildlife to see, including the Arctic snow-bunting, reindeer, hare and – if you’re lucky – the elusive brown bear.

2. Enjoy Husky sleigh rides and snowmobile adventures

Feel the cold air bite at your cheeks as the loyal Arctic huskies race you through the dazzling Lappish wilderness. If you’re lucky, a cuddle might be on the cards with these human-loving dogs too. If you want to be at the helm, zip across frozen lakes on snowmobiles, James Bond-style.

3. Go in search of the Northern Lights

Hidden away in a national park, Pallas is a top spot to see the Northern Lights. Limited light pollution in this untouched area means that nights are crystal clear – perfect for the colourful dancing ripples to perform. Keep your eyes peeled and enjoy the natural phenomenon.
