The inside story
As part of the Zoological Society of London, London Zoo is an important part in this conservation charity's mission. The aim and vision of this charity is to allow wildlife to thrive, engaging, entertaining and teaching millions of people through the animals which live within. Built in 1826, this society is nearing its second centenary, and has delivered a plethora of conservation and education projects including discovering the Okapi in 1901; sending an Arabian oryx to Arizona, marking the first international co-operative breeding program in 1962 and in 2006 rescuing around 950 exotic fish and coral which were illegally imported from Indonesia.
Today you can find over 750 animals species at the zoo, so you'll want to make a day (or night) of it. Whether you want to walk on the wild side and monkey around in lemur enclosure, or hang out in the walk-through spider zone, or whether you're a big cat fanatic and go mad for lions and tigers, or prefer pygmy hippos, there's something for everyone at London Zoo. Get up close and personal with the animals, take part in feeding time and hear fascinating keeper talks, we know you'll leave bright-eyed and bushy tailed.
