The inside story
The Church of Saint Roque is a Roman Catholic church in Baroque style located in the Bairro Alto neighborhood in Lisbon. Built between 1553 and 1573, it was the earliest Jesuit church in Portugal.
The white facade of the church hides one of the most exquisite and decorative churches of Lisbon. Its interior contains eight main side-chapels, as well as five altars in the transepts, most of them in Baroque style. The most notable chapel is the 18th-century Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, which is considered an 18th-century European masterpiece. This chapel was constructed twice, first in Rome, then dismantled, shipped, and reconstructed in São Roque. Adjoining to the church, the Treasure of the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist Museum was built. This sacred art museum contains important baroque goldsmiths and religious vestments collection as well as 16th-century Portuguese paintings.
