Known in English as Calcutta and located on the east bank of the Hooghly River, Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal.
Because it was the capital of India during the British empire, colonial architecture shaped the look of the city alongside modern buildings, hotels, and shopping malls. However, the modern and wealthy face of the city is in extreme contrast with the poverty that has spread through the urban slums.
The colonial past influenced the city's role as the intellectual capital of India: the creative energy that pervades the city is tangible throughout the many cultural shows for art, cuisine, cinema, and music.
One of the best things to do in Calcutta is to visit the Victoria Memorial Hall, with its museum and surrounding gardens. This magnificent building, created for Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, has a mix of European architecture with some Mughal Indian design elements.
Containing everything from a lake, to a rock garden, to a zoo, the Marble Palace conjures up Calcutta's splendor with its impressive architectural details.
The Dakshineswar Kali Temple and the Kalighat Kali Temple are destinations for both tourists and worshippers. Make sure to add a view from the Howrah Bridge to your to-do list, considered one of the busiest cantilever bridges in the world, and don't forget to shop at the New Market.
