Just across the border in North Macedonia is a treasure trove of religious relics, crumbling castles and beautiful Byzantine architecture. Known as 'the Jerusalem of the Balkans', UNESCO-listed Ohrid is a fascinating city to explore.
Sitting serenely on the edge of a gleaming lake, Ohrid boasts Instagram-perfect locations at every turn. Arrive in the city, and you'll make a beeline for the old quarter for a guided tour. Stroll down cascading streets dotted with beautiful houses and gaze up at the hillside to see the bones of a medieval castle looming above.
You'll then head to the coast to see the Church of St John. This stunning 13th-century shrine enjoys panoramic views over the azure waters of the lake below and is one of Macedonia's most photographed spots.
