The inside story
The Synagogue of Córdoba may be small, but it's rich with history and culture. Built in 1313, it is one of only three original surviving pre-expulsion synagogues in Spain, and the only in Andalusia. The other two original synagogues can be found in Toledo. In 1492, the Synagogue of Córdoba was seized by authorities and changed into a hospital before being acquired by the shoemakers guild in 1588 and changed into a community center and small Catholic chapel.
This rare building was designed to hold only thirty people at a time, but it makes up for its small size by reaching high into the sky to allow sunlight to enter from above the surrounding rooftops. The walls inside are richly decorated with intricate white Mudéjar decoration and Hebrew writings.
