What to expect

It was founded by escaped slaves mainly from Cartagena de Indias in the 16th century and freed by Benkos Biohó.

The word "palenque" refers to the palisades erected by fugitive African slaves, during colonial times, to take refuge from their persecutors. That of San Basilio, is a palenque founded in the 17th century by a group of maroons who, under the command of Domingo Biohó (the same Benkos Biohó mentioned above but with his own Spanish name) fled to regain their freedom. Come and meet San Basilio de Palenque !!

What to remember

Pass -

After an hour and a half of driving, we reached the central park of the town; A specialized guide from the community teaches us some basic words in their language, Palenquero.
With the help of a translator we learn all about the exciting and courageous history of this town.
After a short tour of the town, we will have lunch one of the typical meals in a house of native Palenqueros.
After resting for lunch, we will taste the Ñeque and a typical sweet, we appreciate the talent of the students of the Batata music school; its rhythms, including Mapalé and Bullerengue, have a great influence on the musical identity of the Colombian Caribbean.
At 03:30 pm we return to Cartagena.
