The Budapestl Zoo and its Botanical Garden is the oldest zoo in Hungary. With its foundation dating back to 1820-30s, the zoo first opened its gates to the public in 1866. Other than Hungarian species, the zoo originally housed several rare species of monkeys, lemurs, parrots, camels and kangaroos with the first giraffe arrived two years after the opening.
