The inside story
The Arc de Triomf, designed by Josep Vilaseca to serve as the gateway to the 1888 Universal Exhibition, marks the way today to Barcelona's famous Parc de la Ciutadella. While classical in form and grandeur, this unique arch uses a variety of Moorish-inspired style ‘Neo-Mudejar’ design, includig its use of red bricks. The friezes found on the arch are intended to represent Barcelona's respect towards all of the nations taking part in the Universal Exhibition. At the top of the arch, you will find the shields of the 49 Spanish provinces all below Barcelona's own majestic coat of arms. Make sure to spend a few minutes admiring the elaborate sculpture work before heading through the arch and down the palm-lined path to the park. Don't forget to turn back to catch a glimpse of the arc from afar!
