Introducing Bad Mergentheim
Anchored by its impressive Schloss, Bad Mergentheim is a classic German spa town complete with a characterful old quarter. As well as spending some time soaking up the handsome half-timbered buildings around the Marktplatz – which hosts a busy weekly market - make time for the elegant parks or the historic castle and its museum. This is a wine-growing country, so you’ll find some great examples of locally produced wine in the bars and restaurants around town.
Situated around 140 kilometres southeast of Frankfurt in the rolling hills of Baden-Württemberg, Bad Mergentheim is part of Germany’s most famous themed route – the Romantic Road. To relax after all that sightseeing, take a trip to the thermal spa where numerous pools at different temperatures can soothe away your stresses.
Top three things to do in Bad Mergentheim
1. Relax in the spa
The clue is in the name. The ‘Bad’ in Bad Mergentheim means ‘bath’ – the official prefix for a town with a source of mineral-rich water. The Solymar thermal baths are a great place to unwind, with various pools rich in different minerals, each offering benefits to the body and mind.
2. Parks and Gardens
Full of flowering plants, tinkling fountains, streams and pools, Bad Mergentheim’s Kurpark is a spacious green swathe which makes the best use of the abundant springs in the town. The gardens in the grounds of the Residenzschloss castle are also formally arranged with inventive planting and make a relaxing destination.
3. Easy day trips
The Wildpark zoo is just south of town, while Frankfurt - home of skyscrapers and the world’s most famous sausage – is around 90 minutes by road. Closer by, Bad Mergentheim is one of the stops on the Romantic Road, so it’s well connected with other charming towns and villages. Rothenburg and Würzburg are well worth a visit.
