The inside story
Panorama of the Battle of Racławice is a huge painting depicting the battle of Racławice, during the Kościuszko Uprising. The project is a patriotic representation aimed at commemorating the 100th anniversary of the victorious Battle of Racławice: a heroic but failed attempt to defend Polish independence. The battle was fought on April 4, 1794 between the insurgent forces led by Kościuszko, a famous Polish patriot, and the Russian army.
The work was idealized by Jan Styka and painted together with Wojciech Kossak. First painted in Lviv, the painting was permanently moved to Wroclaw after WWII. The panorama is exhibited within a circular structure, while the observation point is central, and presents different scenes visible from different viewing angles.
