The inside story
The Djurgården Canal, also known as Djurgårdsbrunnskanalen, is a canal in central Stockholm in Sweden separating the island of Djurgården with the mainland. The construction of the canal was completed in 1834 by order of King Charles XIV.
The island of Djurgården or commonly known as Royal Djurgården, is a green oasis that carries centuries of recreation and entertainment tradition. The island is home to monuments, museums, galleries, an open-air museum and an amusement park, making it a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike.
The canal was mainly built for aesthetic reasons to complement the Royal park, but also to make it easier for smaller ships carrying cargo to reach the centre of Stockholm. Admire the sights of Djurgården from the water as you cruise by several historical buildings, museums and green spaces. Enjoy the fabulous view of the Stockholm skyline from the water as you head back to the mainland.
