The inside story
Situated along the Griboedov Canal, the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood is one of Saint Petersburg's main attraction sights. It is also known as Church on Spilled Blood, the Temple of the Savior on Spilled Blood, and the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ.
The cathedral has been erected between 1883 and 1907 on the spot where political nihilists wounded fatally the Tzar Alexander II in 1881. The church has been built in medieval Russian style, in sharp contrast with the predominantly baroque and neoclassical style of the rest of the city. The interior contains over 7500 square meters of mosaic and a ciborium on the opposite side of the altar marks the exact spot of Alexander's assasination.
