The inside story
The Witte Huis or White House was the tallest building in Rotterdam and Europe's first skyscraper when it was built in 1898. It is one of the few buildings in the city to survive the German bombardments of 14 May 1940, and is a Rijksmonument that is also included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Standing at 43 meters high, the 10-story building was designed by architect Willem Molenbroek in the Art Nouveau style with white bricks featuring mosaics and statues. This 'modern' construction for its time, was fitted with an observation deck on top of the building's flat roof.
