The inside story
This icon of Rio de Janeiro began as a side-project of Chilean artist Jorge Selarón that little by little became his tribute to the city and the Brazilian people, it was a work of art in constant evolution from 1990 until the artist's death in 2013. It consists of 215 steps that stretch for 125 meters and are covered with more than 2,000 colorful mosaics, some hand-painted by the artist and others collected from more than 60 countries. You’ll probably find one from your country if you pay attention! Selarón’s legacy continues to this day as the Steps brought life to this once-abandoned area, an example of how art and culture can positively transform a neighborhood. You can enjoy a variety of tours to learn more about the history behind the stairs or visit the cafes, bars, or restaurants in the area.
