Have you ever wanted to witness the silent beauty of an ice cave during winter? Well, you’re in the right place. On this tour you’ll be whisked away to a secret underground location close to Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. There you’ll explore an ice cave alongside our experienced guides.
All you have to do is choose a time that fits in with your other plans while you’re here, pack some warm clothes and bring your sense of adventure.
On the day of the ice cave tour, make your way to Jökulsárlón Café, which sits right next to the famous glacier lagoon in southeast Iceland. We recommend that you get there early and make a day of it: Spend some time exploring the glacier lagoon and its surroundings.
Most visitors like to cross the road and visit Diamond Beach too, and witness Jökulsárlón’s icebergs wash up on the black sand. It’s an eerie, magical place - just like much of Iceland! The tour begins with a thrilling ride in one of our monster trucks taking you onto the glacier. The views are spectacular, but the best is yet to come. We’ll stop a short walk away from the ice cave, giving you a chance to wander through the landscape and learn from the guide about the mighty Vatnajokull glacier. It’ll be cold, so come prepared with thick socks and warm layers.
And then onto the ice cave. The word ‘unique’ is overused in the travel industry. But with Iceland’s ice caves that term is an understatement. These rare structures form naturally every year, so no single cave is ever the same and exploring one is a genuine once in a lifetime experience.
Our local guides head out every fall to discover new caves that have formed as the spring waters begin to freeze. They know all the best spots and make tour decisions on a day by day basis to accommodate for the weather conditions and ensure your safety.
Ice cave expeditions are already one of Iceland’s most popular excursions. And because they come and go with the seasons this tour has limited availability. It’s best to reserve way in advance to avoid disappointment.
