The inside story

The Tretykov Gallery is the main museum of Russian national art found in Moscow. Originally began as a personal collection by Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, he later presented his already famous collection of 2,000 artworks to Moscow as a gift in 1892, in the hopes of creating a museum of national art.

The Tretykov Gallery is located to the south of the Kremlin and was the personal residence of the Tretykov family, whose mansion underwent multiple expansions as the collection grew. Finally in 1902 the famous facade was added, designed by the painter Viktor Vasnetsov in a Russain fairy-tale. In the following years the gallery expanded to buildings in the surrounding neighborhoods, growing to its new collection size of more than 180,000 pieces. Exhibits include Theotokos of Vladimir and Andrei Rublev's Trinity to the monumental Composition VII by Wassily Kandinsky and the Black Square by Kazimir Malevich.

In 1985, the gallery administratively merged with the gallery of contemporary art, named the New Tretykov Gallery, housed in a large modern building along the Garden Ring. The New Gallery exhibits art from the 20th century from avant garde and socialitic realism to art of the austere style with underground and emerging trends. Highlights include Yevgeny Vuchetich's iconic statue Iron Felix, the Swords Into Plowshares, and the Young Russia monument. Nearby you can see the Zurab Tsereteli's 280 foot tall statue of Peter the Great, one of the tallest outdoor statues in the world.
