The inside story

The Dead Sea - in Arabic Al-Baḥr Al-Mayyit (“Sea of Death”), and in Hebrew Yam HaMelaẖ (“Salt Sea”) - is a natural salt lake located between Israel and Jordan. It's intriguing ancient history, which dates back to Biblical times, and incredible natural beauty makes this a must-see location for anyone visiting the region.

It's surface and shores are approx. 1,400 ft. below sea level, making it Earth’s lowest point. Almost 10 times as salty as the ocean, the extremely high salt density allows swimmers to float in its waters. As its name suggests, the high levels of salinity and concentration of minerals also means that no fish or aquatic species can grow or survive in the Dead Sea.

Believed to have healing properties, the Dead Sea attracts visitors from far and wide seeking its natural wellness benefits. The nutrient rich mud surrounding the waters creates an all-natural spa treatment. You will find buckets of raw Dead Sea mud along the shore which you can use on your skin and allow to dry in the sun, before washing it off and floating in the water.

The high concentration of minerals in the water, the low elevation and high oxygen levels make for an extremely unusual but restorative environment and are said to heal many health issues including skin conditions, arthritis, heart conditions and respiratory issues.

There are public beaches along the shores open to locals and day-trippers. If you’re looking to stay the night, then there are some luxurious hotels in the area with private access points to the water. You will also find a number of spas located along the coast where you can spend the day relaxing and indulging in wellness treatments.

The Dead Sea is accessible by public transport or car. The easiest and most popular way to visit is booking a guided tour with transport included.
