What to expect

Feast your eyes on some of Gran Canarias's finest viewpoints and villages while munching your way through the island. You'll visit the salt pans of Tenefé and an olive farm, plus you'll enjoy a local lunch in an atmospheric rural restaurant. Teresa, one of our local guides, says, ‘We Canarians are very proud of our gastronomy. And on this tour, you get to sample some of its richest flavours with lunch in a restaurant dedicated to putting a contemporary twist on traditional Canarian cuisine.'

First up is a visit to Las Salinas de Tenefé. On the go since the 18th-century, the pans are still producing salt to this day. Some of its salts, such as ‘flor de sal', are highly prized by gourmands. Then, it's on to Los Olivos olive farm, which is also an ecological and cultural centre. Here, you'll get the lowdown on the traditions of Canarian olive oil production. After a tour of the groves, which have more than 1,000 trees, you can sample a selection of its award-winning oils.

We'll then head to Agaete, in the northwest, for lunch at the family-owned Casa Romantica restaurant. After nibbling on tapas made from locally sourced ingredients, you can poke around the adjacent museum dedicated to island life in centuries past. Teresa adds, ‘Tragic poet Tomas Morales lived here, when was the village doctor during the 1910s. He's considered the greatest exponent of Canarian romanticism.'
