Lauded as one of the most beautiful towns in Italy, Otranto delivers on great views and a fascinating past. Spend a few hours here soaking up the scenery, shopping in the market, or losing yourself in the maze-like medieval centre. A must-see is the Romanesque cathedral, famous for its ornate mosaic floor.
Elevated above the turquoise hues of the Adriatic Sea, the town is packed with eye-catching spots. Begin with a guided walk around the warren of medieval streets and you'll get to admire the town's architectural mix of Byzantine and Mediterranean styles, dominated by the 15th century fortress.
The star turn, however, is the 11th century cathedral. Be sure to check out the incredibly detailed mosaic floor and the macabre Chapel of the Dead that contains the bones of Otranto martyrs executed during a Turkish invasion of 1480. Afterwards, you'll have some time to relax, shop or watch the world go by from a café.
