With innumerable sandy dunes and a fairly desolate interior, Boa Vista is heaven for quad bikers. Spend two hours blasting along the island's deserted trails, with some memorable pit stops in between.
Adrenaline-fuelled thrills should also be safe, so you'll first receive instruction on how to handle these powerful four-wheelers. Take the wheel yourself or choose a double quad and you can relax as the passenger. Then, you'll rev out of the base, headed for the renowned Cabo Santa Maria beach. Normally, the turquoise ocean and pristine sands would be the main attraction – but the show-stealer is the steel skeleton of a huge cargo ship that wrecked on the reef here in the 1960s.
Open up the throttle as you make your way down the black volcanic tracks, heading back to base. If you think your appetite will only be getting going after two hours on the quad bike, a four-hour excursion is also on offer.
