The inside story
Discover the culture and history of the Berlin Wall at the East Side Gallery with its impressive and historically significant murals stretching along a 1.3 km section of the remaining wall. In the heart of Berlin, take a walk along the wall and admire its beauty.
Just after the wall came down, 118 artists representing 21 different countries started painting what is today the East Side Gallery, officially open on 28 September 1990. The following year, it was designated a protected mural, allowing us to experience it in its original state even today. As many paintings have weathered badly over the years or have also been wilfully damaged, there have already been several restoration efforts, one of the largest renovations took place in 2009.
