The inside story
Muiderslot is a 13th-century medieval castle that looks like it comes straight out of the pages of a fairytale book. Also referred to as the Amsterdam Castle since it’s located only 15 km to the east of the city, Muiderslot is one of the most well-known and oldest castles in the Netherlands. The well-preserved castle now serves as a national museum that is open to the public.
Muiderslot is exactly what you’d imagine a typical castle from the Middle Ages to look like: it has a square shape with tall towers at each of its corners and a defensive moat surrounding the premises. It was originally built in 1285 by Count Floris V, although it was later destroyed and then rebuilt around 1380. You can find the castle in Muiden at the mouth of the Vecht River.
