De oude stad van Kairouan weerspiegelt het verleden van Tunesië. Er hangt een vredige sfeer die de afgelopen eeuwen niet veel is veranderd. Tijdens deze tour verken je historische locaties zoals het Romeinse colosseum van El Djem, de op een na oudste moskee van Afrika en de medina van Kairouan. Karim, een van onze deskundige lokale gidsen, zegt: "Kairouan is de heiligste bestemming van Tunesië, bekend om zijn sierlijke islamitische architectuur. Het interieur van de Grote Moskee bestaat uit eindeloze pilaren en bogen, kleurrijke tapijten en kroonluchters in de vorm van pijnbomen die deze ruimte nog mooier maken. Zelfs de riolen zijn versierd met ingewikkeld tegelwerk.”

Je start in de ommuurde stad Kairouan. De medina wordt beschermd door zandstenen muren. En je slentert op je gemak door het doolhof aan smalle straten met witgekalkte huizen, beschilderde luiken en gemetselde bogen. De Grote Moskee van Kairouan wordt beschouwd als een van de mooiste voorbeelden van islamitische architectuur in de regio. Naast het prachtige interieur van de moskee heeft het complex ook een grote gebedshal, een binnenplaats en een minaret.

Een andere belangrijke locatie in Kairouan is het mausoleum van Sidi Sahbi, bekend om zijn sierlijke tegels en stucwerk - het is een populaire bedevaartplaats voor moslims. Tussendoor stop je voor lunch. Om dan een kijkje te nemen bij het amfitheater van El Djem, het op twee na grootste amfitheater ooit gebouwd door de Romeinen. Tijdens zijn hoogtijdagen boden de steile tribunes van dit oude stadion plaats aan 35.000 toeschouwers die naar gladiatorengevechten keken.

Protected by sandstone walls, the old town offers medina is a maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses with brightly painted shutters and brick-laid archways, perfect for exploring. Then you'll visit Kairouan's unmissable Great Mosque - considered one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the region. As well as the mosque's splendid interior, the complex also features a large prayer hall, an arcaded courtyard, and a minaret.Another important site in Kairouan is the Sidi Sahbi mausoleum, known for its beautiful tilework and stucco decorations – it's a popular site for pilgrimages. Next, there's a stop for lunch before visiting El Djem amphitheatre, the third-largest built by the Romans. During its heyday, up to 35,000 spectators would pack its steep stands to watch gladiatorial fights.
