For a slice of authentic Crete, look no further than this day of discovery. You'll experience the best of the west and see some of the countryside. Highlights include Agia Triada Monastery, an Allied war cemetery at Suda Bay and the Aptera archaeological site, where you'll learn how the ancient Minoans lived. Yiannis, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The ruins of Aptera are special thanks to their location. The remnants of this ancient city are perched on a hilltop with incredible views over the White Mountains, Cretan Sea, and Akrotiri peninsula.'
We'll begin with a photo stop at Prophet Elias Hill, known for its views over Chania and the White Mountains. The hill is also home to the Venizelos Graves, a monument dedicated to Crete-born father and son Eleftherios and Sophocles Venizelos, who were both prime minister of Greece. Next up is the Agia Triada Monastery, set amid hills carpeted in olive groves and vineyards. Built in the 17th century, the monastery boasts fabulous Renaissance architecture and historic importance. The museum houses a collection of valuable coins and manuscripts.
We'll stop to pay our respects at Suda Bay War Cemetery, final resting place of 1,500 Allied servicemen, then head for Aptera, once a major economic and cultural hub in Minoan Crete. Here, you'll have the chance to wander through the ruins to see ancient structures such as the Roman cisterns, Hellenistic temples and Venetian fortifications. The tour also includes a typical Cretan snack and drink.
