Known as the ‘Jewel of the Atlantic', Essaouira is an atmospheric fishing port with age-old souks, pastel blue seaside houses, and a bustling UNESCO-listed Medina. You'll have plenty of time to discover this coastal gem with a guided tour, a visit to an Argan Oil cooperative, a typical lunch and some free time to explore the town. Amina, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Harvesting argan oil is tricky work. The fruits are collected from the thorny branches of the argan tree, the tough exterior is removed and the hard shell inside is cracked open by hand to extract the kernels. After roasting, the kernels are ground and pressed to extract the oil.'
Leaving Agadir in the early morning, we'll travel to Essaouria via a brief stop at Tamri – a surfer's paradise –for a panoramic view of the beach. Next, we'll stop at an argan cooperative to find out about the production process. Amina adds ‘Argan oil has a wide range of uses, from culinary to cosmetics. It is rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E, so it's perfect for skincare and haircare.'
When we arrive in Essaouira, your guide will take you around the fortified Medina, which was given UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001. You'll be taken to see the port, a lively market, the jewellers' district and the artisan complex. One of the typical products to look out for is the handcrafted marquetry boxes made with local Thuya wood. Then you'll go to a local restaurant in the medina for a tasty lunch, followed by time to explore the city at your own pace before heading back to Agadir.
