Menorca is a small island with a big reputation. Its capital, Mahon, boasts the second-deepest natural harbour in the world. You'll explore it in a glass-bottom boat and visit a gin distillery before delving into the old town. Martí, one of our local guides, says, ‘For almost the entire 18th century, Menorca was a British colony – so it is quite different to the other Balearic Islands. The city centre is perched on top of the cliffs overlooking the harbour, and you can spot the British influence in many buildings. Sash and bow windows – the locals call them boinders – are still a common sight.'
First up, you'll learn all about Mahon's history on a cruise around the impressive harbour. Your guide will give you the lowdown on the stories behind the town and the islets dotted along the inlet and point out places of interest as you sit back and enjoy the ride. When you arrive back in town, you'll pay a visit to Xoriguer gin distillery to learn how the local gin is made. You'll get to taste the renowned, aromatic tipple which was once the favoured drink of the British soldiers and sailors stationed on the island.
To round off your tour, you'll have free time to explore Mahon. Don't forget that it'll be market day at Plaça de s'Esplanada, so you'll have a chance to mingle with the locals as you poke around for bargains. Keep an eye out for typical local shoes, called avarcas, and Mahon cheese – both make great souvenirs.
