The drama of the Saklikent Gorge makes it one of Turkey's most alluring natural wonders. It's the nation's longest and deepest gorge, and it's the second-largest in Europe. This private tour combines a visit to the gorge with the ancient ruins of Tlos. Leyla, one of our expert local guides, says ‘Tlos is home to some great examples of the rock-hewn tombs we see around this area of Turkey, always carved high above the city to bury people close to the gods.'
Ancient Tlos boasts relics that stretch from the Lycian to Ottoman periods. Leyla adds, ‘It's not known exactly how long ago Tlos was founded, but the discovery of a bronze hatchet dating from over 3,000 years ago gives you a good idea.' Located on a sloping hillside, it's compact, but contains a remarkable number of ruins in good enough state to give an indication of their original form. There are rock-cut Lycian tombs, a theatre, Roman baths and much more to admire. On a private tour, your guide will have more time to devote to your own points of interest.
After lunch at a garden restaurant by the Gizlikent Selalesi waterfall, we'll venture into the natural splendour of the Saklikent Gorge. Wander along waterside walkways, peer over bridges and paddle through the shallow river bubbling through the canyon. The cool, fresh water and remarkable scenery are a true contrast to the coast. You'll also have some free time to breathe in the pure mountain air before visiting a renowned local carpet workshop to see master weavers at work.
