La vieille ville de Kairouan fait écho au passé de la Tunisie avec un air de sérénité qui a peu changé à travers les siècles. Cette visite vous propose de découvrir des sites empreints d'histoire, tels que le colisée romain d'El Djem, la deuxième plus ancienne mosquée du continent africain et la médina de Kairouan. Karim, l'un de nos guides locaux experts, explique : "Kairouan est la destination la plus sacrée de Tunisie, réputée pour son architecture islamique raffinée. L'intérieur de la Grande Mosquée est fait de piliers et d'arcs interminables, de tapis colorés et de lustres illuminés qui ajoutent à la beauté de l'espace. Même les canalisations sont décorées de pierres complexes."

Nous commencerons par la ville fortifiée de Kairouan. Protégée par des murs de grès, la médina de la vieille ville est un labyrinthe de ruelles, de maisons blanchies à la chaux avec des volets colorés et des arcades en briques, invitant à la découverte. Vous visiterez ensuite l'incontournable Grande Mosquée de Kairouan, considérée comme l'un des plus beaux exemples d'architecture islamique de la région. Outre le splendide intérieur de la mosquée, le complexe comprend une grande salle de prière, une cour à arcades et un minaret.

Un autre site important de Kairouan est le mausolée de Sidi Sahbi. Connu pour ses magnifiques tuiles et ses décorations en stuc, c'est un lieu de pèlerinage populaire. Un arrêt est prévu pour déjeuner avant de visiter l'amphithéâtre El Djem, le troisième plus grand amphithéâtre construit par les Romains. À son apogée, il pouvait accueillir jusqu'à 35 000 spectateurs qui s'entassaient dans ses gradins pour acclamer les gladiateurs au combat.

Then you'll visit Kairouan's unmissable Great Mosque - considered one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the region. As well as the mosque's splendid interior, the complex also features a large prayer hall, an arcaded courtyard, and a minaret.Another important site in Kairouan is the Sidi Sahbi mausoleum, known for its beautiful tilework and stucco decorations – it's a popular site for pilgrimages. Next, there's a stop for lunch before visiting El Djem amphitheatre, the third-largest built by the Romans. During its heyday, up to 35,000 spectators would pack its steep stands to watch gladiatorial fights.
