This walk along the two highest peaks in Madeira may be challenging – but the views from the top are well worth the effort. You'll traverse across the central mountain range up Pico de Arieiro and Pico Ruivo to Achada do Teixeira for 13km where you'll be rewarded with never-ending views across the island all the way out to the sea.
You'll start your five-hour Highest Peaks Walk by driving up Pico Arieiro where you'll join your guide who will accompany you all the way. Here you'll all set out along the path that joins the two highest peaks in Madeira ready for the adventure ahead. Along the way you'll be immersed in the flora and fauna the island is famed for including a heather forest and different species of birds.
You'll also come across formidable rock formations and villages that can be seen in the distance, and all the while you'll feel even closer to the sky. The rugged terrain and undulating paths require physical endurance but you'll be surrounded by extraordinary views from the get-go.
