The island of Divar is small enough to explore on foot, but even better to see by e-bike. Think paddy fields crisscrossed by rickety lanes, peeling colonial churches and brightly coloured temples. Discover it all in total comfort and ease, without leaving a carbon footprint. Arjun, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Divar Island seems like a sleepy place today, but in the past it was the capital of the Kadamba dynasty, and later became a busy trading port during the Portuguese rule. The ancient forts and churches you see are reminders of the island's historical prominence.'
The name Divar translates as ‘place of the Gods' – and there's certainly something heavenly about it. Arriving by ferry from Old Goa, you'll grab your e-bike and follow your guide through the paddy fields and vibrant countryside of the island. Divar is known for its well-preserved Portuguese-style houses. These picturesque buildings showcase the architectural influence of the Portuguese colonial era, with their colourful facades, ornate balconies, and tiled roofs.
Passing crumbling colonial churches, sleepy single-lane roads and deserted beaches, it feels like a land that time forgot. Filled in on fascinating facts and the history of the area, you'll break for high tea at a boutique hotel, then take a leisurely cycle back to port for your return ferry. The ferry itself is all part of the experience, crossing the Mandovi River where you might catch a glimpse of traditional Goan riverside life.
